Q: Horse behaviour

my horse comes from a previously abusive home. she can be a bit skittish and head-shy. lately, she has been acting up while being caught. she lunges is anyone approaches with her bridle. she has bitten me on the arm once, and sometimes rears up as you approach. once she's tacked up, she kicks and bites during mounting. she refuses to stand near a mounting block. what can i do to either cure her or protect myself? i always fetch her in with a hat on, for protection.

A: Horse behaviour

It sounds like you have a potentially serious problem developing with this horse... I can only advise that you seek out a professional Trainer's help before you (or someone else) gets hurt. Wearing a hat (assumed helmet) is very wise of you and I would hope you make sure to wear it whenever you are near this horse. Try never to handle this horse alone, have another person handy in the event of an emergency. A horse like this can be very unpredictable and you need a Trainer who is skilled with behavioral problems.

Good luck and do be careful...
