Q: my chin is losing his appetite... HELP!!!!

i'm really damned worried here. i'm in indonesia, which is kinda hard to find those vets who know how to deal with chins... and my chin is kinda losing his appetite for the past week or so... i'm quite worried as he's getting thinner and thinner.

On normal days, he eats almost all the things i give him, like banana, papaya, hazelnuts, almonds, and sometimes just normal peanuts. and his favorite so far is hazelnuts, but surprisingly, when i gave him tonight, he seems to eat a few bites, and throw the rest away... i really dunno what happen to him and what to do with him... any suggestion or information or precautions i can take???
just for your info, my little sister just got a puppy around 2 months ago. and most of the time, the puppy is getting near the cage to smell what it is in the mornings. i don't know whether this has to do with his losing of appetite. But please reply ASAP... thanks a million... -desperate-

Wow, do you give him any pellets at all? That's a really unhealthy diet there. I suggest you start feeding him pellets and hay. Eliminate the treats. It's like raising a child on candy and ice cream, they aren't going to grow up to be big healthy kids!

My suggestion is to find a vet who deals with small exotics or rabbits. Get his mouth x rayed, because you just never know, his loss of appetitie could have to do with his teeth. Mallocluders, generally get thinner if they can't eat properly(molars end up overgrown, eventually the chin will slobber, etc..etc..).
You need to take him to a vet and get him on a new diet! I'm sure it's hard to find good feed, but try http://www.oxbowhay.com in the US. They are good, perhaps they will ship to you. Just don't give him anymore treats, you could be causing him tooth problems by doing so and a short life span. :(

Q: my chin is losing his appetite... HELP!!!!

i do give him normal diet, as in alfalfa and timothy hay alternately each month. and i do give him pellets daily i bought from singapore every month and bring those in.

those treats i mentioned are the ones i will give him occassionally when he is behaving himself whenever i let him out for 3 to 4 hours in my bedroom under my supervision. coz i don't want him to chew on something important. coz it had happened once that he chewed on one of my most important paper lying on the floor when i wasn't around. hehehe...

will X ray stress him? from the info i got around here, most of the vets deal with rabbits lousily... as in, when the rabbits get a small sickness, they will just give a suggestion of putting him down... i was quite angry with those though. but couldn't do a thing.

anyway, i tried to keep the puppy away from him this wholeday and prevent the puppy from barking for the whole day. the result is quite amazing as he ate more of his hay today. hopefully will improve tomorrow. is there any way to improve chin's appetite?

I am confused, do you give him hay only once a month or do you give it daily??

If your pellets are alfalfa based he needs to have Timothy hay exclusively. Most pellets are alfalfa based. Too much alfalfa is not good, it's very rich.

Secondly, that is too much free run time. 30 minutes to an hour is PLENTY and of course he's going to chew, that's what Chins do. You need a Chin safe room, no painted wood to chew on, no cords, no fabric, no blankets, etc...

The bathroom works well as long as the drains are covered, toilet seat down, and no holes he can escape in to and get stuck. And again NO painted woods...

Any visit outside the house will stress him but if it's necessary it's necessary!!

Keep the puppy OUT!!! Chinchillas are a prey animal, they don't like any prey animal and they prefer the quiet.

His appetite will improve if his environment improves and his feed improves...

Pellets daily (good quality pellets, Tradition, Oxbow, Mazuri, or the equivalent of those if you can't get them). Hay daily, and water always. NO MORE TREATS!!

What CuddlyCrittersExotics meant to say was that chinchillas are prey animals and they do not like PREDATORS!! Even if your puppy is small and friendly, he is still a predator by nature. It is very possible that the puppy made him lose his apetite, as your chin has to constantly be on his guard and may have lost the will to eat.

This is also why chinchillas are so good at hiding illnesses. Most often if a chinchilla is sick, they will not show any signs until they are near death. If chinchillas did not have this trait, it would make them very easy meals in the wild :)

Q: Very Small Correction :-))

i do give him the hay daily. but i change alternately each month from alfalfa to timothy. coz i heard from the pet shop in singapore, that it's recommended to do this.
so if i give him alfalfa this month, next month i will give him timothy. this is done so as to get good nutrients from both hays. as what i was told.
as for pellets, i don't constantly give him the same brand of pellets. this is because it's kinda impossible to get chins' pellets here in indonesia. so i flew it over from singapore whenever it's possible. for now, i give him SLUIS chin's pellets. but sometimes my sister cannot find this brand, and she will just grab what's recommended for chinnies in the pet shop and send it over to me.
and i had forbide the puppy from going upstairs where the chin area is for this 3 days. and yes, his appetite does improve with it.
as for treats, i tried to change the treats to dust bath. think it's much more healthier than a piece of treats right?:P
i did tried to give him around 30 min run time, and think he's quite happy with it. he went back to his cage himself so i gave him a dust bath instead. hope this is good enough for him?
and guys, really thanks lots for the help. i really feel so much relieved by today... hiehiiehihieihiei... i think i can't eat as well when my chin lose his appetite:)
once again, thank you very much all of you:)

Hello again,

I just wanted to say that I had never heard of this brand of food before. I would like to leave some websites you can check out on some top quality chinchilla pellets. Also, in my opinion, I think it would be better for your chin to have a more consistant diet as opposed to switching pellets every month. You can order top quality chin pellets online. Here are a few websites you can visit:
http://www.mazuri.com/
http://www.lonestarchinchilla.com/mazuri.html
http://www.chinchillas.com/estore/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=3
http://www.oxbowhay.com/link.sp?page=ChinchillaDeluxe

I could not find much on the internet about the pellets you are currently using. IF you do decide to start ordering online, I hope that nobody has a problem sending them to you, as you are pretty far away from most dealers.

On the other hand, by ordering online, you will not have to worry about whether your sister will find the same pellets every time (and just because a chinchilla pellet is recommended by pet stores, does NOT always mean that it is a good pellet)

:) Im glad your chin is starting to get his apetite back :)

Please do not hesitate to post back if you have any more questions, we would be happy to help!

Take Care

Kate
