Q: beta fish
I got a beta fish two years ago this coming oct.,I was away in Fla.for three months, and left him in the care of a friend. When I came back his tank was fithy, and the filter was very brown, there was like a fuzz on the stones in the bottom of the tank, the tank is 2.5 gal, with a filter.I changed the filter, cleaned the tank and the stones, and put in new water, that was two weeks ago,but my fish seems to not have any energy,he lays on the bottom of the tank,he's not eating,he attacks his food and spits it back out, help! What can I do for him?

I am going to ask some questions and if you would post back with the answers it will help either myself or another expert figure out what m ay be wrong with your Betta.
1. How often do you change your water and how much do you change?
2. Do you add a water conditioner to remove harmful chemicals from your tap water?
3. Do you test your water, and if so, what are your readings for Nitrate, Nitrite, and Ammonia?
4. Do you have a heater - if so, what is the temperature?
Testing your water is probably the most important thing to do right now. Your test results will say a lot about the quality of your water and help us figure out what might be wrong.
I suspect that you cleaned the tank a little too well and now the tank is trying to cycle again. It is very important that you test the water as you may be experiencing an Ammonia spike which will be followed by a Nitrite spike - both of which can quickly kill fish. If you have any trace of Ammonia or Nitrite, immediately do a 25%% water change. Wait a day and test and keep going until your readings are Ammonia and Nitrite are -0- ppm and Nitrate is 30 ppm or less.
