A: how soon will a cat go into heat after giving birth
Hi,
The earliest I've experienced and heard of is a week after giving birth, on average it's as early as 2 to 3 weeks. I'd suggest that if your cat is unfixed to keep her indoors and away from any males (have males neutered right away if you have any in the house or around her) and have her fixed as soon as possible.
For my cat in my experience due to health concerns (she was underweight and had kittens when under a year) we had to wait 12 weeks/3 months after the kittens were born. I would suggest speaking to your vet as to the earliest time available for your cat.
It is not recommended to leave your cat intact as there is feline overpopulation in the world. Unless your cat is pure, rare, and has all the qualifications of a queen (which can be found here: http://www.fabcats.org/breeding_from_your_queen.html
) it is best to fix your cat.
These links discuss in further detail the benefits and reasons behind fixing your cat:

A cat can go into heat as early as 48 hrs. after delivery, therefore any unneutered males must be kept away from the mom-cat and her kittens. A male who's trying to get to the female to mate might kill kittens by accident if he feels they're in his way. Keep the mom and her kittens behind closed doors in a safe, dimly lit, quiet room if you do have unneutered males or other animals in the house.

Of course, don't let her go outside (because of the danger of pregnancy and many other dangers) and spay her as soon as the kittens are weaned (ideally between 8-12 weeks).
