Q: new puppy is sick and won't eat
I have had my new puppy for less than 48 hours. I adopted him from the shelter and they told me they saw tape worms in his stool...so...we went straight to the vet. The Dr wasn't in but they gave him a pill to get rid of them and told me to come back the next morning. We went in and, as I already knew, they told me he's underweight, he has tape and round worms and he's got a cold. His gums..which are supposed to be pretty and pink are almost white. I can't get him to eat ANYTHING. It's also HELL to give him his meds that were prescribed. He doesn't want anything. What can I do?

Good morning.
My suggestion is to get him back to the vet this morning. The white gums are an indication that he is quite ill. White or grey gums can be indicative of severe dehydration, infection or anemia (low blood levels). Your pup may need some IV fluid therapy to get him on track but leaving him without treatment could cost him his life. If he had a big infestion of worms his blood levels could be affected as well. I would recommend running a full blood panel on him to see what is going on inside.
His lack of appetite is a very big concern and the longer he goes without food and water, the sicker he will become.
Please take him back to your vet this morning. If your vet is not available today, please take him to an emergency clinic. He is quite ill and requires immediate medical treatment.
Good luck with the little guy and please let us know if you have anymore questions.

Q: new puppy is sick and won't eat
Well, I did take my sweet Leo to the vet. He stayed there all of Friday night and half of Saturday and continued to get worse. He was in horrible pain...to the point he would groan when I tried to pick him up. I decided to send him to the angels so he wouldn't hurt anymore. The dr thinks he had distemper. She said since I didn't have him long he had it before I adopted him from the Shelter. Anyway...I cried and cried...but I know it was for the best. I hope to get a new friend soon. My family and I miss having a sweet puppy to play with. Thanks for the advice.
