Q: betta fish looks ill

I have a betta fish that is just about 3yrs old. It's my understanding that the life expectancy is only 2yrs, but I've taken very good care of my guy. We just moved to a new house last week and now he seems ill. His color is going out of his body, his scales seem lifted up and ruffle like and he isn't eating. I did a full water change, but this doesn't seem to be helping. I would like to treat him if it's something other than old age, it seems strange that it happened right when we moved. I don't think it's water temp either, please help, I'm very fond of this fish.

A: betta fish looks ill

you say his scales are uplifted-does he resemble a pinecone? (does he look bloated as well?) if so, this is an uncureable disease called dropsy. no one really knows what causes it, but it is suspected that it is genetic and is brought on by stress.

the stress from moving could have triggered it.

its good to know that your betta has lived for such a long time. sadly, today most bettas dont. a betta should live to be 3-4. if he dies, take pride in knowing that you took good care of him.
