It's entirely up to you, really. I don't like the "empty" feeling and usually go out and get another one within a month. If you feel you are ready to share your life with another dog, you can get one when you like. As always, there are tons of dogs and puppies at the shelter looking for a good home. (Unless you are looking for a pure bred).

If you aren't looking for a particular breed, go visit your local shelter. You can speak with an adoption counselor and explain what you are looking for and they can help match you with an appropriate pet. Spend time with any prospective pets - take them for a walk, or if the shelter has a room, ask to use the room to sit and get to know the dog. You don't have to pick one out that day, you can go back and visit again if you don't find one that you feel is right.

Most pets you get from a shelter will have current vaccinations and are usually fixed. Some shelters also microchip their animals too. Again, it's up to you if you want to rescue a shelter dog, or adopt a pure-bred. I fall in love wth any furry face, so it doesn't matter to me :)

Best of luck, I wish you well and that you do find a new companion. It's very sad to lose a pet, but also so rewarding having one.
