Q: under aged pregnancy!

I got 2 female guinea piglets and one turned out to be male. Now we've seperated them we're pretty sure the female's pregnant. How old do piggies have to be to successfully give birth?

How can you be sure she's pregnant? They show almost no signs until the last few weeks before delivery.

There are few problems associated with the sow being exceptionally young except that there is an increase in dystocia (the pelvis doesn't expand for delivery) and a C section is required.

The most important thing to remember is that she should be handled as little as possible and stressed as little as possible. Towards the end of her pregnancy she should be kept alone and quiet. Having another pig in with her can stress her and cause her to injure herself. Breeders often breed in groups for convenience sake, but that's not in the best interest of the pig.

Make sure she has alfalfa hay rather than timothy during gestation and make sure she gets plenty of Vit C. Supplement 1/4 of a 100 mg chewable tablet every day. Do not put it in her water as you can't tell how much she's getting that way.

Learn how to sex Guinea pigs. If you push on the genital area, the males penis will protrude. It's pretty easy to tell the difference.

We're not sure just how pregnant she is since when we bought the 2 they were together, but she's alot heavier than the other piggy and her tummy is all bumpy. I havent been picking her up and I'll just feed her the right stuff and see what happens. Thanks for your help!
