Q: Anal gland problem

What is the cause of anal gland problem? My german sheppard/huskie mix has an awful stech coming from his bottom? Can I do anything at home for him - or does he have to see a vet to get this resolved?

A: Anal gland problem

Sometimes the anal sacs become impacted, and the result is a foul odor. Some breeds have more of a problem with this than others.

If you have never expelled your dog's anal sacs before, it would be better if your veterinarian does it for you the first time. You may watch and learn, and do it yourself. Or, if you feel more comfortable, you can ask your vet to do it periodically.

Best of luck to you!

They don't express themselves, and can become impacted/infected. I would take your dog to the vets and look for a possible infection and if this problem he's having is forever reoccuring, it might be a good thing to talk to your vet about having them removed. Dogs will scooch to try and express them. If you're smelling an odor, they are draining but maybe not when he's going to the bathroom like they should. You can wash around his rectal area, using baby wipes. I would talk to your vet about it. Anal glands that aren't draining are very bothersome to dogs. Your Vet can show you the proper way to express them.
