First get him to the vet ASAP
Second make sure your box is deep enough and clean enough

From my Cat FAQ:
Blood in the stool is not normal it can be caused by different reasons.
It can be caused by something it has eaten, perhaps a piece of rough food, as red blood occurs with bleeding in the colon or rectum that could be caused by an irritant.
Then again it could be caused by something rough or sharp that has caused a tear in which case it will not be a one of situation. If the blood is dark and tar-like that suggests bleeding in the stomach or upper intestinal tract and the cat must go to the vet now.
I am sure you will be able to identify if the blood is bright red and fresh looking or if it is tarry looking.
Some vets in some areas seem to prefer a stool specimen to be taken with the animal, if this is the case make sure you take it in a sterile containes. ie. a screwtop jar that hes been sterilised or one of these specimen tubes that are allready sterile that you can get from the pharmacy. Other vets are quite happy to accept the description from a reliable owner rather than have faecal samples transported in hot conditions. If in doubt ask your vet whether he/she requires a sample or not when you phone to make the appointment. If your vet does not require an appointment phone ahead to check.
